Executive Board Retreat 2016

The 2016 Grand Valley Alternative Breaks Executive Board with our furry pal, Trip!

The 2016 Executive Board Retreat was this weekend, and we all had a blast learning, volunteering, and reflecting together.

Working with the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative in Detroit, Michigan.

During the weekend we had the opportunity to work with and learn from the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative! This organization does fantastic work in Detroit, Michigan, and we highly suggest you check them out!

We’re excited for the new year, and we hope you are, too.
See you soon, Lakers!

ABCs 2016

Four of our executive board members had a blast at Break Away‘s ABCs (Alternative Break Citizenship schools) this summer! They attended:

Sexual Violence Prevention and Response
in Atlanta, Georgia with Emory University

AND

Ten Years Later: A Neighbor-Driven Recommitment
in New Orleans, Lousiana with Project Homecoming.

Both were incredible, informative, thought-provoking, challenging, empowering experiences! We can’t wait to utilize what we learned– both as a program in the 2016-2017 year, and as individuals in our daily lives. Here’s to a new year, and striving to build a society of active citizens!

Thank you, Break Away: The Alternative Break Connection!

(Oh, we’re especially excited about the friednships we made with members from SVSU Alternative Breaks, Alternative Breaks (EMU), and Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center (Central Michigan University). Hmm… maybe there will be some collaboration soon…)

We thank Break Away for this honor, BonfireFunds for providing us with a platform to create the shirts, all of the active citizens to whom the shirt is dedicated, and all of the alternative break programs throughout the country that inspire, encourage, and challenge us to grow.

April, the 2016-2017 GVAB president, with our 2016 Spirit of Service Award!

Student leaders in our organization recorded a total of 1,400.5 hours on Service Tracker, earning Grand Valley Alternative Breaks an award for the highest total hours reported by a student organization for the 2015-2016 school year.

Thank you to all who have contributed to our organization this year– none of this would be possible without your invested time and energy! Together, let’s move forward and continue to create positive change and cultivate active citizenship in our community.

The Alternative Breaks Movement: The 2015-2016 Year in Review

2016-Infographic
Check out this excellent infographic that Break Away created to illustrate the impact made by alternative break programs across the country during the 2015-2016 year.

‪Grand Valley Alternative Breaks is a small part of a much larger Movement started by our parent organization, Break Away, and we are inspired and encouraged by all of the programs, active citizens, and communities that contribute to this bigger picture.

To illustrate the impact made by all alternative break programs, Break Away created an infographic (show above) that depicts the numbers of AB participants, community partners, trips, hours of direct service, and other interesting statistics. Check it out!

To learn more about the Alternative Breaks Movement, check out Break Away: The Alternative Break Connection‘s National Chapter Survey Results and the 2015 Annual Report.

At the local level, the 2015-2016 year has been one of growth and learning, and we are grateful to all of the student leaders, alumni, GVSU faculty members, AB programs throughout the country, community partners, and everyone else who has contributed to our program and made this year a success. We could not have done it without you– thank you!
